The White Desert (Sahara el Beyda) is a national park in Egypt's Western Desert, about 500km from Cairo. Famous for its surreal chalk-white rock formations sculpted by wind erosion into mushroom shapes, towers, and other-worldly landscapes. Often described as "like being on another planet." Perfect for overnight camping under the stars.
Our desert safaris include: 4x4 jeep transportation with experienced Bedouin driver-guides, all camping equipment (tents, mattresses, blankets), traditional Bedouin meals cooked over campfire, drinking water and soft drinks, Cairo pickup and drop-off, and guided tours of desert sites. International flights and alcoholic drinks are NOT included.
Yes, desert camping with an experienced operator is very safe. Our Bedouin guides have generations of desert knowledge and know the terrain intimately. We use reliable 4x4 vehicles with satellite communication, carry emergency supplies, and follow established routes. Wildlife is minimal (occasional desert foxes) and we camp in protected areas. Over 18 years without incident.
The best time for desert safaris is October to April when daytime temperatures are comfortable (20-30°C). Peak season is November to February with cool nights perfect for stargazing. Summer (May-September) is extremely hot (40-50°C) and not recommended for desert trips. Full moon periods offer magical lighting but fewer visible stars.
Siwa Oasis is 750km west of Cairo, near the Libyan border. Our tours include private 4x4 transfer from Cairo (8-9 hours drive) with comfort stops. Alternatively, we can arrange domestic flights to Marsa Matruh (1 hour from Siwa). The journey itself is part of the adventure, passing through stunning desert landscapes.
Essential items: warm layers for cold desert nights (can drop to 5°C), comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF50+), camera with spare batteries, headtorch, personal toiletries, and any medications. We provide camping equipment, food, and water. Dress modestly out of respect for Bedouin culture.
